2009 release "Quack"
"Quack" is an acoustic based recording combining elements of Jugband, Ragtime and old time Blues. The idea was to capture the feel and vibe of early American Blues and Jugband styles.  That is, mainly acoustic instruments, and everyone in the studio at the same time playing together with no overdubs. Just like the old days.

To help us out we were very happy to have at the controls Alan Dawson at Witzend Studio, and as guests on the recording the very talented Dave Clarke on fiddle, harmonic, vocals and mandolin.  Dave has graced many CD's by acts from Perth and Fremantle and we were privileged indeed to have him on board.

Driving up all the way from Bridgetown, Western Australia to join in the session was Australia's favorite Spoon Player,
Deb 'spoons' Perry.  She added her unique spoon action & percussion to several of the tracks.

In addition to our regular drummer, Kevin Rooney, we added on both percussion and some tracks on the kit, John (Fabe) Wootton.  Fabe has played many gigs with the Duck as drummer, so it was vital that we had him on the CD as well.

A BLOW BY BLOW ACCOUNT OF THE ACTION ON QUACK...
1. All by Myself. A song by the great Big Bill Broonzy from about 1941. Features Phil on piano & Dave on Harmonica.

2. Jug Band Music. The Memphis Jug Band song that has been covered by many artists over the years.  Well we had to have a Jug and Spoon duet by Jeff and Deb and this is song for it.

3. Ain't She Sweet.  Old Ragtime tune from about 1920.

4. From Four Till Late.  From the pen of Robert Johnson.  No blues CD would be complete without a nod to Robert. This is first of four songs with Jeff on vocal and harmonica, John on guitar and Harry on upright bass.

5. Blues My Naughty Sweetie Gives To Me. Early Jazz/Ragtime piece.  Came to us via the inimitable Captain Matchbox Whoopee
Band.  Although not strictly a blues song, it probably has the word blues in it more than any other song in history. A great fun song.

6. Gentleman Jack. C
omposed and sung by our piano player Phil Bennett.  A song about an unsavory character written in the Jug Band style.

7. That'll Never Happen No More.  An Arther Blake, or Blind Blake as he is known, Ragtime song from about 1927.  Another song featuring just Jeff, John & Harry.

8. Cocaine Habit Blues.  The incredible Memphis Jug Band once again.  This has been a stage favorite for many years.  Cool spoon solo Deb!

9. Lyssandra.  The first of two instrumentals by John Chopping, with the help of Harry on Double Bass and Dave on Harmonica.

10. Ring A Rosy Rag.  A Ragtime song that first made its appearance on the album, "Alice's Restaurant" by Arlo Guthrie.

11. Out With the Wrong Woman.  Big Bill Broonzy song one more time. Was an early Duck song resurrected for this session.

12. Maggie.  We always loved the work of Ray Dorset, better known as "Mungo Jerry".

13. Trouble in Mind.  A traditional blues with some fine fingerpickin' guitar from John with Harry on upright bass & Jeff on vocal & harmonica.

14. Sister Kate. An early Ragtime piece, given the Duck treatment.

15. One Way Gal. From Texan William Moore from about 1928. The last of four stripped down songs with Jeff, John & Harry.

16. The Mystery Song.  A closing instrumental and solo guitar piece by John Chopping.

The musicians who contributed to "Quack".
